About the museum

The Graal-Müritz local history museum shows the history of the Baltic health resort, from fishing village to seaside resort. On March 1, 1994, the local heritage association turned the village's former warm bath into a local history room, which brought together typical exhibits, pictures and panels on the roughly 700-year history of the village. Since July 6, 2004, it has officially borne the name Heimatmuseum (local history museum).

The exhibition covers the founding of the village, the living and working conditions of its residents, the development of the spa business, and natural events such as ice winters and storm surges, in which the village lost three sea piers. Paintings and photographs, along with souvenirs brought home by seafarers, convey a sense of faraway places. It also honors well-known painters and writers who spent their summers here, including Lyonel Feininger, Hans Fallada, Franz Kafka and Erich Kästner.

The building is to be redesigned spatially: the new concept arranges the exhibition thematically and chronologically, shows more objects and adds more detailed explanations. The museum cannot be visited until it reopens. The works of painter Joachim Weyrich, which had been shown in an attached gallery since 2003, are currently being placed by the municipality in the Haus des Gastes (visitor center).
