About the museum
The Wemmetsweiler local history museum grew out of the work of the Arbeitskreis Heimatkunde (local history working group), which published the “Wemmetsweiler Heimatblätter” in the 1980s and gathered material on village history. From this collection a museum developed, located in the attic of the primary school and run by volunteers. The municipality of Merchweiler is the sponsor.
The exhibition uses one large room and three smaller side rooms to show the everyday life of people in the region, and especially in the village, in the 19th century. Flags of the Wemmetsweiler clubs hang from the ceiling, including one from 1898. Old photos and postcards document the street scene around 1900, four village maps show the village's development, and a panel is devoted to the Fischbachbahn (Fischbach railway), which served coal transport and was completed in 1879.
In the side rooms are tools of wagon makers, shoemakers and carpenters, a bedroom, a historic schoolroom and a butterfly collection. Display cases show miners' equipment; there are also fossils from local mining and the 14 Nothelfer (Holy Helper) figures from the chapel demolished in 1901. A large area is dedicated to the popular vote of January 13, 1935 in the Saar territory, with original documents from the voting commission.
