About the museum

The idea of a local history museum in Quierschied took concrete shape in 1984, when an interest group formed on the initiative of the then local district head (Ortsvorsteher) to gather everyday and work objects. In 1988 the municipality provided the building that houses the museum today, which was largely restored by volunteer club members. The museum opened in 1992. The supporting association was renamed Förderverein Heimatmuseum Quierschied e.V. in 1993 and received the 1995 cultural prize of the Stadtverband Saarbrücken. In 2004 the museum passed into municipal ownership; the friends' association still supports it today, including by helping to staff the opening days.

The exhibition is divided into two main themes. The first is the early industrialization of the village, covering the prehistoric iron smelting works, the Eisenschmelze Fischbach of 1728, the Glashütte glassworks of 1779, the electricity supply from 1904, mining, the Knappschaftskrankenhaus miners' hospital of 1907 and the Kraftwerk Weiher power plant. Since the end of mining, the mine rescue collection has been regarded as unique in the Saarland.

The second theme is the middle-class and farming way of life and work: living kitchen, bedroom and laundry room, tools related to "Vom Korn zum Brot", dairy farming and beekeeping, and church objects and documents on club life and political history.
