About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Wustrau has its home in the former Heimatschule (village school) building. The building went up in 1833 in place of an older schoolhouse, because peat digging had settled many families in Wustrau and the neighboring villages and pupil numbers had risen sharply. Under the protection of Landrat (district administrator) Friedrich von Zieten, it became a well-equipped rural school that was considered exemplary in the Mark Brandenburg. An extension was added in 1905.
After 1945 the plain village schoolhouse was no longer sufficient, and lessons moved into the castle. When school operations there ended in 1976 due to structural deficiency, the school moved to Weinbergweg. The two classrooms of the village school were still used by the youngest pupils until 2003. Since 2004 the building has housed the local history museum, which is run by the Heimat- und Kulturverein Wustrau-Altfriesack (local history and culture association).
The exhibition shows how people lived in the past. In “Uromas guter Stube” (great-grandma's good parlor) stand, among other things, a piano, a sewing box, a linen cupboard and a sofa, all gathered from local residents. A second room is devoted to the origin of the Luch (Brandenburg marshland) and to working life at the beginning of the 20th century.
