About the museum
The village, peat and school museum is located on the upper floor of the manor house in Protzen near Fehrbellin, which was built around 1753. Until 1945 the estate owner lived here; afterward the house served as a refugee shelter, and during the GDR period as a school. After the Wende it was extensively renovated and is today the village center.
The museum opened in August 1999 on the initiative of the Insel e. V. Protzen. It tells the story of the village, almost 700 years old, on the northern edge of the Rhinluch, whose origins are Slavic and which was first documented in 1324. Former crafts and field tools show how the mostly farming residents lived and worked.
A separate section is devoted to peat cutting, which in the late 19th century raised the village population to over 500. A reconstructed peat hut and peat-cutting tools make this vivid. Two fully furnished classrooms show school as it was 100 years ago and in GDR times; a further part covers school development from 1945 until the Wende.
