About the museum
The Heimatstube Gittelde is run by the local heritage and history association founded in 1984. It is in Gittelde's first schoolhouse, built in 1737, on the old schoolyard beside St. Mauritius Church. Gittelde in the Harz has a history of more than a thousand years, shaped above all by mining and iron smelting.
The main building displays school benches, apothecary equipment, guild signs, fire brigade uniforms, writings, books and pictures, as well as information on mining. In the former stable, the association shows farm equipment such as plows and harrows, a kitchen, and workshops of various trades once practiced in the village.
