About the museum

The idea for a Heimatstube (local history room) arose in the late 1990s around the St. Gertruden parish: small exhibitions of everyday objects, clothing and documents that a Gleidingen collector showed at parish events met with so much interest that in 1998 citizens came together and founded the Kulturring Gleidingen e. V. as the sponsoring organization. The association wants to preserve the history of the village, independent for over a thousand years and a district of Laatzen since 1974, and especially to engage children and young people with it.

The Heimatstube opened in 2000, and further rooms were added in 2007. It is located on the upper floor of the listed first school of the village, which over the course of its history also served as a clubhouse, a residence and a meeting place, and is now used as the Treff Alte Schule (Old School meeting place).

The permanent exhibition shows the everyday life of villagers in earlier times in themed rooms, including a small kitchen, a parlor and a historic classroom. It is complemented by changing exhibitions, for example on Gleidingen's Jewish community, on Gleidingen citizens in the First World War, or on local history; clubs and private collectors also regularly present their collections in the rooms.
