About the museum
The Kulturgemeinschaft Sarstedt was founded on June 30, 1971, originally to save a historic building from demolition; alongside its cultural program, it set itself the goal of building up a local history museum. On September 30, 1984, the Sarstedt local history museum opened on the first floor of a listed building at Weberstraße 20.
Because the collection kept growing, it moved at the turn of the year 1995/96 to the Haus am Junkernhof, Vor der Kirche 5. There the former school kindergarten, an old half-timbered house, was partly renovated, and a single-story building that once housed a vocational school and Realschule classes was converted into a museum and event center; a foyer between the two buildings serves as the entrance today.
Over a large area, the museum mainly shows the history of Sarstedt: traditional crafts such as a ropemaker's workshop and a complete wheelwright's shop, a historic pharmacy, and extensive exhibits on the history of the Voss-Werke, a factory for stoves, cookers and laundry machines. The house also serves as a venue for music, literature, theater and cabaret.
