About the museum
After 1945, around 3,000 of the roughly 70,000 people expelled from the town and district of Mährisch-Schönberg found a new home in and around Bad Hersfeld. Otto Kühnert, who came from Mährisch-Schönberg, established a local history collection in 1953. In 1954 the town and district of Hersfeld took on the sponsorship (Patenschaft) and provided rooms for it.
Since 1979 the collection has been housed in a half-timbered house on Neumarkt that the Heimatkreis (homeland association) purchased and renovated; in 2011 the ground floor was extended with an annex. There, display cases show everyday objects, customs, porcelain, glass, textiles, traditional bonnets and jewelry, supplemented by paintings and sculptures, most of which were made after 1946.
Key focuses are traditional costumes and textiles, a geological collection, mementos of skiing in northern Moravia and sacred objects. A room upstairs commemorates Franz Schubert and his paternal ancestors from the region. The building also houses the office, the heritage archive and the library of the Heimatkreis.
