About the museum
The local museum is in the historic Herzebrock monastery complex. The monastery was founded in 860 as a foundation for unmarried women of the Westphalian nobility and is considered the first women's monastery in the Diocese of Osnabrück. The Heimatverein Herzebrock (local heritage association) runs the museum in the north wing, directly next to the Catholic parish church of St. Christina.
The exhibition on the second floor documents the more than 1,100-year history of the village, the church and the monastery, with paintings, reproductions and display panels, including a chart of the abbesses. Also on show are exhibits on rural living and on school, agriculture, crafts and industry: old household appliances, clothing, historic machines and tools.
Part of the museum is also an East German heritage room, which recalls the arrival of hundreds of refugees and expellees from the eastern territories after World War II. The association also looks after the separate Caspar Ritter von Zumbusch Museum in the sculptor's birthplace on Clarholzer Straße.
