About the museum

Schloss Rheda, residence of the Princes of Bentheim-Tecklenburg, remains in private ownership to this day. The outer ward, surrounded by the River Ems, is characterized by 18th-century half-timbered buildings; on its west side stands the elongated, two-storey Marstall (stables) of 1760 with horse stable and carriage house.

For the 1988 Landesgartenschau (state garden show) in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, the castle garden was reconstructed and a carriage museum was set up in the Marstall. It shows town, travelling and sporting carriages as well as sleighs and harnesses once used in the castle's service, and also a fire engine built in Gütersloh in 1788 for the castle.

The museum is part of the regular castle tour, which also includes the Romanesque double chapel in the tower, the White Hall, the tapestry rooms and the toy museum.
