About the museum
The Heimatverein "St. Wenzel" Könnern a. d. Saale was founded on November 19, 1991. Several attempts to set up a local history museum, for example in a storehouse and in the old hospital, failed for lack of money and unresolved questions of ownership. In April 1996 the town gave the association vacant shop premises on Magdeburger Straße; after renovation, the Heimatstube opened on October 6, 1996.
The exhibition grew over the years, and larger rooms were added in 2004. It shows a school room from the 1950s, models and pictures of local history, the geology and plant life of the Saale valley together with a contour-line relief model from around 1940, and memories of the Könnern–Rothenburg Kleinbahn (light railway). There are also historic toys from around 1900, "Ur-Omas Küche" (great-grandmother's kitchen), pieces on the region's former wine-growing and a large room on local trades. Changing special displays are shown on one table area.
For a long time Friedrich Sander led the Heimatstube. After his death in 2007 his son Peter Sander took over, who is also chairman of the association.
