About the museum
Without the spinneret there would be no man-made fiber: the Spinndüsenmuseum is devoted to this inconspicuous component, through whose finest bores synthetic fibers are formed. The Gröbzig watchmaker Friedrich Eilfeld developed the first metal spinneret in 1908 on commission from an artificial silk manufacturer; until then, delicate spinnerets made of glass had been used. In 1909 he received a patent for it, and in 1910 he returned to Gröbzig, where he built up production. His company grew to around 170 employees and supplied customers worldwide.
After World War II the company was nationalized and developed into a modern model enterprise in the GDR; after reunification it was reprivatized. Spinnerets are still made today at the traditional Gröbzig site.
The museum grew out of a private initiative and opened in June 2008. On about 60 square meters it shows tools and spinnerets from Eilfeld's hand, as well as fixtures and machines that trace the technical development of spinneret manufacturing up to the present, supplemented by pictures and period documents.
