About the museum

Carl Loewe was born in Löbejün in 1796 as the son of the local cantor and became one of the best-known German ballad composers; he died in Kiel in 1869. On the site of his birthplace next to the town church of St. Petri, a school building was erected in 1886/87, which is known today as the Carl-Loewe-Haus.

After a renovation funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the Ostdeutsche Sparkassenstiftung together with the Saalesparkasse, the Internationale Carl-Loewe-Gesellschaft opened the Carl-Loewe-Museum there in April 2014.

The permanent exhibition presents Loewe's life, his extensive output, and his position in the society of his time. On display are handwritten scores and letters as well as first and early editions. In the attic is what the museum says is the world's largest collection of sound recordings of his songs and ballads, which can be experienced at listening stations. A chamber music hall offers space for concerts, and a specialist library supports Loewe research.
