About the museum
The Kreismuseum St. Blasien opened in 1989 and is run by Landkreis Waldshut. It is housed in the Haus des Gastes, a converted building of the former monastery, where the stables were once located.
The focus is the history of the Benedictine abbey. From the remote cell "Cella Alba", a monastery developed that, under Prince-Abbot Martin Gerbert (1720–1793), became a place of learning and scholarship as well as a center of secular power. The period after the monastery was dissolved in 1807 is also presented, when the place kept its significance in a different way.
Another focus is the period around 1900, when aristocratic spa guests in St. Blasien lived a luxurious lifestyle. The collection also includes the first skis made in Germany, as well as sections on the geology and nature of the Black Forest. An art cabinet with works by Hans Thoma and Franz Xaver and Hermann Winterhalter, and a church treasury with Romanesque pieces complement the regional history collection.
