About the museum
The Hiltrup Museum was established in 1984 out of the work of the local heritage society under the direction of Bärbel Reisener. Since 1998 it has been based in the former Hiltrup fire station, which was built in 1934 as an equipment house and extended with a tower in 1935.
The fire brigade remained in the building until 1966; it was then used from 1977 to 1994 as the studio and home of the painter Klaus Möllers. In 1997 and 1998 the building was renovated and converted into a museum; the opening took place on 23 August 1998.
The permanent exhibition deals with the history of Hiltrup, which was an independent municipality until 1975. The museum also shows exhibitions by various artists and serves as a venue for events. It is run by the association Hiltruper Museum e. V., which maintains the building rented from the city of Münster and manages the archive. In front of the entrance stands the bronze sculpture "Diskuswerferin" (Discus Thrower) by Marietta Hanses-Koering.
