About the museum
The Historama is the museum of the former Benedictine abbey of Hornbach, founded in 742 by Pirminius. With the renovation and new use of the monastery complex, a modern connecting building was created between the main house and the former left side aisle of the monastery basilica, and the museum is housed in it.
The reconstructed side aisle and the preserved pier arcades give an idea of the size of the Romanesque monastery church. An illuminated transparency with a charter, the convent seal and a floor plan of the complex bathes the room in blue light. A film shot on site introduces the significance of the Christian West.
Stone fragments bear witness to the art of medieval stonemasons. Museum walls and computer terminals with simple menus tell of the life of Saint Pirminius, of everyday life in the monastery, of writing and book art such as the Hornbach Sakramentar, and of the building history of the complex in computer animations. A separate area honors the Hornbach botanist and physician Hieronymus Bock and his Kräuterbuch (herbal).
