About the museum

The Mannlich-Haus stands in the Herzogsvorstadt, which was built in the 1770s to plans by court architect Ludwig Hautt for senior officials of the duke. House number 8 went in 1772, in a compulsory lottery, to Duke Christian IV, who gave it to his court painter Johann Christian von Mannlich; the family moved in in 1773. In 1857 Ludwig Molitor acquired the property; in 1954 it passed to the Protestant regional church.

The Zweibrücker Kulturgut-Stiftung Gehrlein-Fuchs, founded in 1976 by Emmy Gehrlein, née Fuchs, bought the house in 1984 and had it comprehensively renovated. Since then it has been a memorial site for Mannlich and the Molitor family and houses the foundation's exhibition rooms. The room layout and the building fabric still largely correspond to the baroque state.

The centerpiece is Mannlich's "Vogelwerk", a cycle of ornithologically precise and mythological bird pictures in gouache, which the painter's descendants have shown on loan since 1986. In addition there is a large collection of lithographs by Mannlich, his pupils and companions, permanent loans from the ducal era, and an exhibition on the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken in the 18th century. In the garden, a bathhouse was added in 1831 as a Russian steam bath to prevent cholera; it was restored in 2002 and now houses a historic copper smithy.
