About the museum

The Heimatstube (local heritage room) grew out of the work of the Zweibrücken district chapter of the Federation of Expellees. From 1980, the city provided the association with a collection room in the attic of the building at Herzogstraße 9/11, where keepsakes from expellees from East and West Prussia, Pomerania, Silesia, the Sudetenland and other regions of origin were gathered. In February 1990, the collection was opened to the public for the first time.

In early 2002, it moved to the former Maercker School at Grinsardstraße 16, where the newly designed Heimatstube opened on September 28, 2002. On display are pictures of the places of origin, maps, documents, traditional costumes and typical objects such as amber jewelry and mining lamps from Upper Silesia. A library of around a thousand volumes covers settlement history, flight and expulsion.

A particularly valuable item is a hand-woven East Prussian wedding coverlet from 1799, which was part of a traditional bridal trousseau. Members of the association volunteer to look after the exhibition and explain the exhibits to visitors on Sunday mornings. The city has agreed that, should the association no longer be able to maintain the Heimatstube, the collection will pass into municipal ownership.
