About the museum
A paper mill originally stood on the Garte. In 1847 the wool manufacturer Franz Josef Fromm bought the former paper factory and set up a flannel cloth factory and spinning mill there. His son Carl Fromm took over the business in 1880, renewed the hydropower plant and in 1888 had an engine house built for a portable steam engine. A fire in 1901 destroyed part of the buildings, which were quickly rebuilt.
After the mill closed, the dilapidated ensemble was saved by a support association, which later acquired the spinning mill building. In the following years the buildings and wash house were renovated, a visitors' staircase and an exhibition workshop were created, and in 2011 the residential house was renovated in keeping with its listed status.
Today the site combines industrial monument, gallery and cultural pub. Since 2018 the historic machines have been put back into operation, including the Krempelwolf, Pelzkrempel, Langflorkrempel, roving card with web divider and self-acting mule, driven by a transmission.
