About the museum
The Heimatverein Waake-Bösinghausen (local heritage association) runs two collections in Waake, which have since been brought together. Since 2002 Willi Hartmann built up an agricultural collection which, in the former cowshed of the Wangenheim estate, displayed around 1,000 items across more than 400 square meters, including harvesting machines, home butchering equipment, historic washing machines and a furnished farmhouse kitchen.
When the owner wanted to use the building differently, the association decided in 2018 to move the exhibition into the historic stone barn on the estate. The move and conversion, financed with funds from the EU, the municipality, foundations and donations, cost about €400,000.
The local heritage museum, which opened in 1994 in the former village school next to the church and showed village history, linen weaving, shoemaking, blacksmithing and stonework, has largely been integrated into the new Museum auf dem Gutshof. The old rooms will serve as an archive in future.
