About the museum

The Heimat- und Kulturverein Wiebelskirchen (local heritage and culture association) was founded in 1975, after Wiebelskirchen became part of the city of Neunkirchen in the 1974 regional reform. Soon it turned to tracing the past on the Kirchberg, where legends told of an old church. In 1977 a member came across a stone sarcophagus with a skeleton, which was considered a small sensation in Wiebelskirchen. With the permission of the state monument conservator and under the direction of archaeologist Emanuel Roth, an excavation followed in the early 1980s.

It uncovered the foundations of an 11th-century church on the remains of a Roman country villa, two four-gods stones, stone sarcophagi, and a cemetery with more than a thousand burials. There were also many ceramics and coins. Finds point to a medieval ironworks on the site, from which the first cast pots are said to come.

To house the finds, the association initially set up a museum in a farmhouse; today it is housed in the Wibilohaus, where the city of Neunkirchen provides the association with rooms. An attached gallery is used for lectures, seminars and exhibitions.
