About the museum
The firm J. H. Büsing Sohn was founded in 1853 as a general store in a former posting-station building on the postal route between Ovelgönne, Abbehausen and Stollhamm. In 1897 Gustav Büsing, who had taken over the business from the founder in 1891, had the present store built on Butjadinger Straße, an imposing building for its time.
In 1927 the business passed to the Freese family, who considerably enlarged the sales area with an extension in 1938. Inside, the shop fittings from the second half of the 19th century remained largely unchanged. Until the death of the last owner, Elmer Freese, the shop still stocked around 3,000 everyday items.
In the back rooms the house preserves evidence of more than 150 years of merchant history, mostly documented by invoices, receipts, delivery notes or catalogues. The shop has been open again since 2010 and is run by a support association; it sells, among other things, household goods, craft and needlework supplies and wool.
