About the museum
The Landsberg shoe retailer Heinrich Pflanz collected shoes for decades and opened the Historical Shoe Museum on the Vorderer Anger in 1995.
The collection shows shoe fashion from eight centuries, traditional shoes from around the world, oriental pointed shoes with gold embroidery and Chinese shoes for bound feet. There are also shoes made of unusual materials such as seagrass, straw, wood or car tyres, as well as items belonging to famous personalities, including the ceremonial shoes of King Ludwig II and ankle boots of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. A collection of shoehorns was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest in the world.
