About the museum

The Landsberg am Lech city museum is located in the listed former Jesuit grammar school above the old town. It belongs to the city's municipal museums, which also include the Herkomer Museum and the Weiß-Egger estate. After a renovation of about five years, the building opened in January 2026, initially for guided tours through the empty, restored rooms. The new permanent exhibition has been on view since July 25, 2026.

"Wege nach Landsberg" covers 700 square meters across two floors. One floor is devoted to the transformation of the town: a city model with projections guides visitors through seven chapters, from the first settlements to the present. It covers the salt trade and the town's founding, the Jesuit order, the Lech river, and everyday life, costume, legends, festivals and guilds.

The second floor tells of contemporary history: Hitler's fortress detention in Landsberg, the beginnings of the Hitler myth, exclusion and persecution on the spot, the eleven sub-camps of the Dachau concentration camp with a name room for the well-known prisoners, and the postwar period, with a reception camp for Holocaust survivors and the War Criminal Prison. The exhibition design uses interactive and multimedia elements.
