Hohenzollerisches Landesmuseum
State history museum in the Old Castle of Hechingen with finds and art from more than 100,000 years of Hohenzollern history.
About the museum
The foundation of the collection was laid from 1896 by the state conservator Wilhelm Friedrich Laur, who above all saved works of art from churches in the Hohenzollern lands from being lost. The archivist Karl Theodor Zingeler added prehistoric and early historic archaeological finds. From 1920 the holdings were on public view at Hohenzollern Castle.
When the Hohenzollern regional communal association was dissolved in 1972, the city of Hechingen took over the collection. Since 1974 the museum has been housed in the Old Castle on Schloßplatz. The building once served as the administrative and utility building of the princely Renaissance residence and housed, among other things, the chancery, the grammar school, and a princesses' palace; later came a knitwear factory, a dental practice, the library, the town hall, and apartments.
After fundamental renovation, a redesigned permanent exhibition on Hohenzollern history opened in March 2005, with an extension added in 2012. The tour runs from the Old Stone Age to the present and is divided into archaeological finds, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque; there is also the Oelser Heimatstube (local heritage room). Among the best-known pieces are a Bronze Age double grave and sacred works of art, and the splendid Hohenzollern Wedding of 1598 is staged audiovisually.
