About the museum

The Prague theologian and reformer Jan Hus came to Konstanz for the Council in November 1414, was arrested a few weeks later, and was burned as a heretic on July 6, 1415. According to tradition, he spent his last days of freedom in the late medieval half-timbered house by the Schnetztor gate, which has been regarded as a place of remembrance for him for more than two hundred years; whether he actually lived in this very house is not historically certain.

In 1922 the Czechoslovak state bought the house on what is now Hussenstraße and in 1923 handed it over to the Hus Museum Society in Prague, founded in 1919, which still owns it today. With support from the Czech Ministry of Culture, the Hussite Museum in Tábor, and the city of Konstanz, the building has been renovated several times and used for exhibitions.

To open the Council's anniversary celebrations, the current permanent exhibition on Hus's life, teachings, death, and legacy opened on July 6, 2014. The house belongs to the Städtische Museen Konstanz (municipal museums), presents a different special exhibition on Hussite history every year, and sees itself as a place of German-Czech encounter. Konstanz is a member of the Association of Towns with Hussite History and Tradition.
