About the museum
The St. Lampertus Fundgrube is a historic ore mine in the mining town of Hohenstein-Ernstthal. The mine operated until its closure in 1910; surviving features include working galleries, shaft lining from around 1873, as well as cast-iron pump pipes and wooden pump rods.
After the Tiefer St. Lampertus Erbstolln drainage adit was rehabilitated in 1996, the Freundeskreis Geologie und Bergbau (Friends of Geology and Mining) explored the mine workings and gradually made individual sections accessible to visitors. Since September 2008, the mine has officially been open as a show mine through guided tours. Above the shaft stands a simple shaft house modelled on medieval examples.
The Huthaus (mine foreman's house) at the shaft yard serves the association as its headquarters and museum. Founded in 1952, the Freundeskreis is dedicated to researching and preserving the mining history of the region and runs the site on a voluntary basis.
