About the museum
The museum is dedicated to the Gersdorf painter and graphic artist Heinz Tetzner (1920–2007), who worked in the tradition of the Expressionists and in 1999 received the Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz). People, animals and nature are the main themes of his work. In the GDR he was monitored by State Security (Stasi) and marginalized because of his attitude.
The collection is housed in the Hessenmühle, a four-sided farmstead (Vierseithof) in the center of Gersdorf that, according to tradition, arose around 1450 as a sheepfold and water mill. After a fire in 1903 the farm was rebuilt; in GDR times it was the seat of an agricultural cooperative (LPG). In 1999 the municipality acquired the complex and had it renovated. On August 26, 2001, the Tetzner Museum opened in the former mill wing with a permanent exhibition showing a cross-section of oil paintings, watercolors and prints. Tetzner himself was often on site during his lifetime.
Since 2006 the Förderverein Tetzner-Museum e.V. (friends' association) has looked after the house on a voluntary basis. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and explains the background of the works as well as Tetzner's artistic development. The association also organizes special exhibitions, concerts and an annual print market.
