About the museum
Ernst Georg Baumgarten (1837–1884) was a head forester and lived in Grüna, today a district of Chemnitz, from 1872. Some 20 years before the first Zeppelin, he built steerable airship models with modest means. They were driven by spring power via propellers and steered with "turning wings" of his own invention. In 1879 he publicly demonstrated an unmanned model.
Around this time he met the Leipzig bookseller Dr Hermann Wölfert (1850–1897). From 1880 the two built manned non-rigid airships which, for lack of a suitable engine, were powered by muscle power. After Baumgarten's death, Wölfert continued the work alone and in 1888, together with Gottlieb Daimler, tested the world's first flight of an aircraft with a petrol engine. In 1897 he was killed in an accident during a demonstration in Berlin.
The memorial exhibition presents this chapter of airship history, newly researched and with modern media technology. It opened on 20 and 21 September 2019 in Grüna town hall and was set up by the Heimatverein Grüna e.V., founded in 2001. Besides the two pioneers, the room offers information, pictures and videos on the history of Grüna.
