Hutmuseum Nürnberg
Nuremberg's smallest museum: in the vaulted cellar of a hat shop, a master hatter uses historic machines to show how felt hats are made.
About the museum
The Brömme family of hatters has been based on Innere Laufer Gasse in the Sebald part of the old town since 1878, when Johann Brömme set up his first workshop here. After World War II the business grew under the name “Hut-Brömme” to several branches in Nuremberg and Erlangen.
To mark the company's 125th anniversary, Horst Brömme, the fifth-generation owner, opened a private hat museum in the buildings at Innere Laufer Gasse 31/33 in early May 2003. It is considered the smallest museum in the city. Today it is part of the hat and concept store “Herr Brömme & das tapfere Schneiderlein”, which Horst Brömme has run together with hat designer Marie-Luise Schneider since 2016.
The heart of the museum is the vaulted cellar, which extends beneath two buildings. It houses original machine tools from the era of industrialization. During the tour, the master hatter explains step by step how rabbit hair becomes felt and how the felt is shaped and cut. Also on display are historic devices such as the conformateur, which was once used to record the exact shape of a customer's head.
