Ikonenmuseum Biedenkopf
Private icon museum in the Schenkbarsches Haus, probably the oldest house in Biedenkopf – visits by appointment only, free admission.
About the museum
The Ikonenmuseum (Icon Museum) is part of a small private museum in the Schenkbarsches Haus next to Biedenkopf's town church. The building is considered the oldest house in town: its vaulted cellar dates back to the High Middle Ages, the lower floors are from the late 15th century, and in 1610, under the magistrate Schenckbar, it received its present Renaissance upper story. It is one of the few houses to have survived several major town fires.
In 2009, two private individuals acquired the property, reunited the two parts of the house and renovated it. Since Pentecost 2010 it has housed a museum that, alongside historic kitchens and everyday history, presents an icon collection and a collection of non-European textiles. The half-timbered house itself is part of the exhibition.
The icon collection comprises Russian, Greek, Serbian and Ethiopian works from the 16th to 19th centuries as well as liturgical objects. The focus is less on splendor than on the theological message of the images; the museum also shows how icons and their metal covers are made and restored.
