Ingelfinger Fass
Wine-growing museum inside a giant wooden barrel in the vineyards above Ingelfingen. The exhibits are visible from outside through display windows at any time.
About the museum
The Ingelfingen entrepreneur and inventor Fritz Müller, founder of the valve manufacturer GEMÜ, had the barrel built as a wine-growing museum for his hometown. Planning began in March 2001, the groundbreaking followed in July 2001, and construction was completed in June 2002. The interior was designed by Ingrid Müller.
The horizontal barrel is a self-supporting structure made of three-layer laminated wood panels with an outer skin of solid oak, and rests on a stone base in the vineyards above the Kocher valley. With a volume of over 700 cubic meters, it is considered the second-largest wooden barrel in Europe – only the Dürkheimer Riesenfass is larger – and the largest self-supporting barrel construction.
Inside, historical wine-growing tools from the Kocher valley are displayed on two levels; larger tools and a metal figure of a vintner stand outdoors around the barrel. There are no fixed opening hours: the exhibition can be viewed from outside through large display windows, and the barrel lies directly on the wine trail. Today it also serves as an event venue, which the Schloss-Hotel Ingelfingen arranges, including catering.
