About the museum

The entrepreneur Reinhold Würth opened the museum in Künzelsau-Gaisbach in 1991 to make his private art collection accessible to the public. It is integrated into the administrative building of Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG, designed by the Stuttgart architects Siegfried Müller and Maja Djordjevic-Müller and built between 1989 and 1991. Visitors thus enter an art museum in the middle of the daily business of a global group specializing in fastening and assembly technology.

The museum shows 20th- and 21st-century art from the Würth Collection in two to three changing exhibitions a year, often supplemented by loans. An early exceptional project came in 1995, when Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed the museum's rooms into a walk-in installation. Numerous large sculptures stand outdoors around the building.

The Museum of Screws and Threads has also been part of the museum since 1991. This permanent exhibition, unique in Europe, tells the cultural history of the screw from its ancient beginnings through the Middle Ages and industrialization to ship propellers and screw shapes in nature; films and hands-on stations also appeal to children.

In 2020 the Museum Würth 2, designed by David Chipperfield, opened a few hundred meters away as part of the Carmen Würth Forum, with its own exhibitions and a sculpture garden. Admission is free at both venues.
