Internationales Feuerwehrmuseum Schwerin
Large fire service museum in the Halle am Fernsehturm with more than 16,000 exhibits and 112 vehicles on the fire service history of many countries.
About the museum
The museum grew out of the Landesfeuerwehrmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (state fire service museum), which had previously been based in Meetzen near Holdorf. In spring 2009 the holdings moved to Schwerin, and in April 2009 the International Fire Service Museum opened in the Halle am Fernsehturm in the Neu Zippendorf district – a multipurpose hall built in 1977.
The operator is the association Internationales Feuerwehrmuseum Schwerin e.V.; André Bartheidel has headed the museum since 2018. On more than 4,500 square meters, it shows, by its own account, the largest fire service collection in Germany.
The exhibition is organized into thematic, country, and period windows and traces the social history of the fire service as well as the technical development of firefighting and rescue. 112 vehicles, trailers, and large equipment form the core. In addition there are special collections of nozzles, helmets, breathing apparatus, model vehicles, and medals and decorations.
Particularly notable are its international focus, with exhibition areas on fire services of other countries, and a breathing apparatus exhibition with a historical training facility that children can also explore themselves.
