About the museum
The Stiftung Mecklenburg (Mecklenburg Foundation) was established in 1973 in Ratzeburg by the Schleswig-Holstein interior minister to collect and preserve the cultural heritage of Mecklenburg. At first it displayed its holdings in rooms of the Ratzeburg district museum; in 1986 the "Haus Mecklenburg" opened on the Ratzeburg cathedral peninsula, in the former cathedral barracks.
Following a decision by the foundation council to move the collection and the seat to Mecklenburg, the foundation moved in 2009 into a side wing of the Schleswig-Holstein-Haus in Schwerin. Since March 2014 it has presented its most attractive pieces on the piano nobile of the house: the permanent exhibition "Mecklenburg – so fern, so nah" (Mecklenburg – So Far, So Near) guides visitors through cultural history in six chapters, supplemented by an interactive surface table.
The collection includes coins and medals, costumes and clothing, furniture, artworks, historical views of towns, postcards and photographs, and a large seal collection. Topics include Mecklenburg writers, the artists' colonies of Ahrenshoop and Schwaan, rural culture, the nobility with their palaces and manor houses, and the history of the towns. Audio guides are available in High German, Low German and English.
