Limited operations. After the major fire in July 2023, the museum is being rebuilt step by step; it is accessible on selected opening days and/or by registration.

About the museum

The Mecklenburgische Eisenbahnfreunde Schwerin e. V. (Mecklenburg railway friends) was founded in 1991 to preserve the railway and technology history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since 2006 the non-profit association has been the operator of the museum at Schwerin Central Station; its members restore and maintain the vehicles and technical installations on a volunteer basis.

The collection includes steam, diesel and small locomotives, historic railway carriages, signal box, signaling and telecommunications technology, and a collection on the history of the Mitropa. Among other things, a steam snowplow stands on the outdoor grounds.

On July 21, 2023, a major fire destroyed parts of the site: the archive and workshops fell victim to the flames, and the fire brigade only just saved the old vehicle hall from complete destruction. Since then the museum has been rebuilt step by step, and a construction diary documents the progress. Visitors can currently come only on selected opening days, when events such as the Kulturnacht (night of culture) and the Advent market also take place.
