Staatsgalerie im Neuen Schloss Bayreuth
Branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in the Neues Schloss Bayreuth, with more than 80 late Baroque paintings, mainly Dutch.
About the museum
The Neues Schloss (New Palace) in Bayreuth was built from 1753, after a fire had largely destroyed the old town palace. Court architect Joseph Saint-Pierre incorporated older buildings on the Lustgarten into the long, extended new structure; Margravine Wilhelmine shaped the design of many rooms in the Bayreuth Rococo style.
As early as the 18th century, a suite of rooms on the ground floor of the south wing served the margrave and margravine as a picture gallery. After extensive restoration, a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections moved in there in August 2007, continuing the courtly collecting culture of the late Baroque.
On display are more than 80 paintings by Dutch and German artists from the late 17th to the 18th century. The focus is on Dutch painting around 1700, with learned history paintings by Gerard de Lairesse, Gerard Hoet and Adriaen van der Werff, as well as still lifes by Rachel Ruysch, Jan van Huysum and Jan Weenix. One cabinet is dedicated to the Munich court painter Peter Jakob Horemans, another room to German landscape painting. The gallery is part of the tour of the Neues Schloss with the margravine's state rooms.
