About the museum
The Historischer Verein für Oberfranken (Historical Association for Upper Franconia) laid the foundation of the collection with its founding in 1827. Its own excavations, donations and loans made it one of the largest prehistoric and early historic find collections in the region. The museum sees itself as the only specialist museum for prehistory and early history in Upper Franconia.
Since the 1950s the collection has been housed in the Italian Building of the New Palace, which was built between 1759 and 1762. In 1993 the exhibition was redesigned and equipped with numerous text and display panels.
Across eight rooms, the route covers the Old Stone Age to the Middle Ages. The finds come mainly from eastern Upper Franconia, with a focus on Franconian Switzerland and the surroundings of Bayreuth.
