Käthe-Kollwitz-Haus Moritzburg

About the museum

In the 18th century, the Rüdenhof in Moritzburg belonged to the electoral menagerie of the nearby hunting lodge, where birds and ostriches were kept, among other animals. The estate later changed hands several times; from 1896 it belonged to the Counts of Münster, who had it remodeled and extended with a stair tower.

After her Berlin apartment was destroyed in the bombing war, Käthe Kollwitz found refuge in the Rüdenhof in July 1944 through the help of Prince Ernst Heinrich of Saxony. She lived in two rooms on the upper floor and died there on April 22, 1945, a few days before the end of the war. Her urn was later interred in the family grave in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde.

After the war, the house passed into municipal ownership. In 1994 the municipality contributed it to the newly established Stiftung Käthe Kollwitz Haus Moritzburg, one of the first foundations in the Free State of Saxony. The memorial opened on April 22, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the artist's death.

The permanent exhibition on the upper floor leads chronologically through the life and work of Käthe Kollwitz in six rooms and ends in the room where she died. On the first floor, the house shows changing special exhibitions, mostly of contemporary graphic art; a printmaking workshop has served artistic education for many years. The foundation is supported by a circle of friends.
