INS LICHT GERÜCKT – Der Coswiger Otto Ehrhardt

The anniversary exhibition marking 30 years of the Karrasburg presents Otto Ehrhardt (1869–1942), a Coswig teacher and internationally successful art photographer known above all for his gum bichromate prints. For the first time, photographs from his descendants' private collection are also on display.

About the museum

The name recalls the Karras knights, who, as feudal lords of Coswig, are said to have lived in a moated castle on this site around 500 years ago. According to legend, Georg Karras shot Elector Maurice (Moritz) of Saxony at the Battle of Sievershausen in 1553. In 1556 the estate passed to Elector August, who used it as a hunting lodge until 1679. Rebuilt after a fire in 1726, the old building gave way in 1897 to the present villa, which later served as a residence, youth center, and apprentices' dormitory.

The museum's history goes back to 1904, when Coswig residents began collecting evidence of local history. After temporary quarters in a school and the town hall, a local history museum opened on Karrasstraße in 1957; it had to close in 1983 because the building was dilapidated. The town took over the Karrasburg in 1991, had it restored in keeping with its historic character, and opened the new city museum there in October 1996.

Today the Karrasburg presents the history of Coswig and its districts in five redesigned rooms, from archaeological finds to the industrial and garden city and well-known local figures; a separate section is devoted to the Alte Kirche (Old Church). Several special exhibitions a year, audio stations, and the mascot Cosimir are aimed especially at families and children. The museum is run by the Kulturbetriebsgesellschaft Meißner Land.
