Besucherbergwerk Kilianstollen
Show mine in Marsberg: guided tours through historic copper mines with colorful minerals and a long mining history.
About the museum
Copper ore was already mined in the Marsberg area in the Middle Ages. From 1872 the Stadtberger Hütte, as a joint-stock company, ran mining on a large scale until the economic crisis and the copper cartel led to its shutdown in 1930. After a final period of operation, mining ended for good in 1945.
The Kilianstollen itself was created in 1842 to open up the Oskar mine. It drained mine water and served to transport ore outside. After about four decades of inactivity, the Marsberger Heimatbund began in 1981 to prepare the adit as a mining monument.
On May 26, 1984, the Oskar mine field was opened to visitors; in 1987 the Friederike mine followed, connected by a connecting tunnel more than one kilometer long. In total, about four kilometers of mine workings can be explored. The tours focus on geology, colorful mineral efflorescence, and the hard working conditions of the miners.
