About the museum
The Museum Mengeringhausen is housed in a Diemel-Saxon urban farmhouse (Ackerbürgerhaus) from 1666. The four-post half-timbered building with an attached storage loft is considered the largest exhibit in the house. The museum is run by the Heimat- und Museumsverein Mengeringhausen (local heritage and museum association).
The collection is divided into several sections: house and prehistory, town and garrison history, crafts and art history, agriculture and household management, and public health. A small branch, the old rope-maker's building (Seilerei) by the viaduct, also belongs to the museum. The museum thus shows how people in Mengeringhausen lived, worked and managed their households.
The museum opens at fixed times in the season and offers house tours on its opening days, which cover the history of the building and life in past times. On selected Sundays there is also an escape room in which visitors search for a lost family treasure. On the website, a virtual museum and the series "Früher – Heute" complement the on-site exhibition; special openings are held on occasions such as International Museum Day and the Day of Open Monuments (Tag des offenen Denkmals).
