Museum der Stadt Marsberg
City museum in a historic school in Obermarsberg on the history of the Marsberg area – currently closed for redesign.
About the museum
The beginnings of the Marsberg museum cannot be dated precisely. Provost Ludwig Hagemann, founding chairman of the Marsberger Heimatbund, laid the foundation for a local history collection in the late 1920s; in 1932, a clubroom with a museum was set up in a shop space opposite the provostry. After years of stagnation, the head of the Sauerlandmuseum Arnsberg reorganized the scattered holdings, and on July 4, 1983, the local history museum reopened in the old savings bank. In the following decades, the collection and archive grew considerably thanks to volunteer commitment.
In 2014, the museum moved into the Sturmi-Schule in the historic district of Obermarsberg, a school building from 1901, and showed a new permanent exhibition in the classrooms on the first floor. It covered geology and copper mining, early history and the era of Charlemagne around the Eresburg, guilds and witch persecution, the Thirty Years' War, works by the Papen family of sculptors, and a historic pharmacy, among other topics. In 2019, the city council decided to rename it from "Heimatmuseum" to "Museum der Stadt Marsberg."
In 2020, the volunteer-run museum won the competition "Kleine Museen im Wandel" from the LWL-Museumsamt, the Westfälischer Heimatbund, and the Museumslandschaft Hochsauerlandkreis. Since then, a new concept has been under way; the old permanent exhibition was dismantled for this purpose, and the museum is closed until its reopening. An escape room on the Carolingian era remains available to book.
