About the museum

The burgher's house at Markt 26 is first documented in 1555; its cellars are said to date back to the 13th century. In 1785 it was thoroughly renovated, as indicated by a date on the keystone of the archway. The last private owner, Karl Friedrich Klötzner, sold the house in 1911 to the town, which rented it out as a residence until 1984.

A museum of regional history had previously existed at Schloss Friedrichstanneck: the Kreisheimatmuseum (district local history museum) there operated from 1953 but had to close in 1980 because of structural defects. It was not until 1992 that the town of Eisenberg set up the Klötznersches Haus, which had meanwhile stood empty and was in need of renovation, as its town museum – so that after more than twelve years Eisenberg once again had a home for its regional history.

The exhibition tells the history of the house and the town, of Eisenberg's industry and clubs, and recalls the duchies of Saxe-Eisenberg and Saxe-Altenburg. Particularly striking are the Schwarze Küche (smoke kitchen) with its medieval furnishings and the vaulted cellar with excavated finds and a 14-meter-deep shaft. A separate room is devoted to the Eisenberger Mohr, the legendary figure from the town's coat of arms.
