About the museum
Silver has been mined in Scharfenberg near Meissen since the 13th century; the district is considered one of the oldest silver mining areas in the Diocese of Meissen, whose 800-year existence was celebrated in 2022. Mining also experienced several heydays in later centuries.
The König-David-Stolln was begun in 1817 as a drainage adit. It runs from the portal on the B 6 federal road about 800 meters into the mountain to the Hoffnungsschacht shaft, and it still drains the mining area today, which is why the entire route is walked through water. The lining consists partly of sandstone blocks or bricks; in other places the adit is cut directly into the rock. Inside the mountain it stays at around 9 degrees all year round.
The Historischer Scharfenberger Silberbergbau e.V. (Historical Scharfenberg Silver Mining Association) maintains the adit and the Hoffnungsschacht shaft and offers public tours in small groups by registration.
