About the museum

The villa in Coswig's Kötitz district was built in 1873 and stands in a spacious English-style park. From 1891 to 1895, the Caracas-born pianist and composer Teresa Carreño lived here with the pianist and composer Eugen d’Albert. The couple married in 1892; their daughters Eugenia and Hertha were born in Coswig. D’Albert had his own pavilion for composing built at the far end of the garden before the marriage ended in divorce in 1895.

After decades of changing uses, the house was extensively restored in 2001 and 2002. Since then, the historically furnished salons on the main floor have served as a chamber music hall and event rooms. The Teresa Carreño und Eugen d’Albert Gesellschaft Coswig, founded in 1995, looks after the legacy of the two musicians and has collected letters, photos, programs, sheet music, and recordings from around the world since its founding.

In July 2014, a newly designed museum opened in the villa, presenting the life and work of the artist couple, their family, and their circle. On display are items from family possessions, autographs, photographs, and the grand piano that Carl Bechstein gave to his goddaughter Eugenia d’Albert. The house is run by the Kulturbetriebsgesellschaft Meißner Land, which hosts concerts, readings, and private celebrations here.
