About the museum
The King Ludwig II Museum opened in 1987 in the New Palace on Herreninsel. It occupies twelve modern rooms on the ground floor of the south wing and traces the stations of the Bavarian king's life, from his birth to his early, tragic death.
On display are painted portraits, busts, historical photographs and original state robes. A separate section is devoted to Ludwig's role as patron of the composer Richard Wagner, with portraits, documents, and theater and stage set models.
The royal castles Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee are documented, as are the king's other building projects. Highlights include state furniture from the destroyed royal apartments of the Munich Residenz and from the first bedroom of Linderhof Palace, as well as decorative art objects commissioned by the court.
