About the museum
Since the mid-19th century, Lake Chiemsee with its islands and Alpine backdrop has attracted painters and became known as a "painters' paradise". In keeping with this tradition, the old Prien town hall was converted into an art gallery in 1985. The same year saw the founding of the Kulturförderverein Prien am Chiemsee (cultural support association), whose statutes place the exhibitions in the gallery at the center of its work.
The house has no permanent exhibition; instead it shows a changing program: regional art, the annual show "Künstlerlandschaft Chiemsee", and presentations of internationally known names such as Dalí, Miró, Warhol or Keith Haring. Every two years, "Kunstzeit Prien" gives young artists a stage in public spaces; since 2021 the association has awarded an art prize.
With the support of the friends' association, the gallery was comprehensively renovated after about 15 months of construction and reopened in January 2017: with a new entrance on the south side, opened side alcoves on the upper floors and an external lift for barrier-free access.
