About the museum

The Prien museum was founded in 1913; the Gallery of the Chiemsee Painters was created in the same year. Since the 1940s it has been located in the former Kistler property "Beim Mayrpaul" on the market square, a craftsman's house built in 1837 with neo-Baroque facade painting. The museum is run by the municipality of Prien am Chiemsee.

The collection is devoted to the history, art history and folklore of the western Chiemgau. Furnished parlors and a Biedermeier room show rural and middle-class living. One focus is the Chiemgau traditional costume including the Prien hat, which the milliner Anna Kopp created in the 19th century. Fishing on the lake is represented, among other things, by the last surviving Chiemsee dugout canoe from around 1850. There are also religious folk art and nativity scenes, evidence of the history of lordship and the church, and of Prien's development after the railway was built in 1860. In the attic are the first Prien fire engine of 1878 and a model of the spectacular moving of the church tower in 1736.

The Historical Gallery of the Chiemsee Painters, redesigned in 2012, traces the emergence of the Chiemsee artistic landscape, one of the significant European artists' colonies since the 19th century, with works by Maximilian Haushofer, Karl Raupp, Josef Wopfner, Hiasl Maier-Erding and Rudolf Sieck. Art of the 20th century, for example by the sculptor Marianne Lüdicke, is also part of it. Regular special exhibitions and customs events round out the program.
